“Studying Abroad was
not part of my original
college life plan. It
opened my eyes to things
I, ignorantly, thought
I already knew and
understood about other
cultures and ways of life
outside the United States.
It not only influenced
the present but opened
doors that have changed
my life forever. From
showing artwork in Paris
to working in a restoration
studio, I now have the
capability to accomplish
what I could have only
dreamed before.”

Study Abroad for Art Majors

line

The Dept. of Art encourages students to further their research and study through
the Education Abroad Program. Study abroad offers art majors opportunities
to broaden their understanding of art and culture while exposing them to
international education. All courses taken through EAP are accepted for UC credit so with some careful planning, you can study abroad and still graduate in four years. Opportunities to receive independent study credit for creative projects abroad are also an option for Art Majors, and should be discussed in advance with the appropriate department faculty.

Why study abroad?
Studying abroad is an exciting and valuable experience for students and provides a particularly relevant role to the study of art. The vast art history,
museums, galleries and cultural environments available through EAP
provide an excellent context and opportunity for intensive firsthand
study of your chosen field.

Living and studying abroad provides students a deeper understanding of a country’s history, social customs, and everyday life. EAP advisors and the department advisors can help you plan a program of study that best suits your interests and department’s curriculum.

Where should I study abroad?
EAP offers a variety of short-term and long-term study experiences in various
locations around the world. Students also have the option of studying in English or in a foreign language. Many students choose to fulfill their General Education requirements while on EAP while others seek to further their studies in their major.

Art majors have tended towards study abroad programs in Western Europe, particularly in Italy and France. However, study in many other locations, such as Africa, Asia, Latin American, Australia/Oceania, Canada and the Caribbean is also available.

Here is a partial list of EAP host countries that offer opportunities in studio art:

English:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Ghana
  • Hong Kong
  • New Zealand
  • So. Africa
  • United Kingdom/Ireland

    Foreign Language:
  • Brazil
  • Chile
  • China
  • Costa Rica
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Spain

    Both:
  • France

When should I study abroad?
Opportunities for study abroad exist for every year of your college career.

Freshmen
Begin planning for study abroad. If you want to begin or continue the
study of a foreign language through the short-term language and culture programs, you can apply in your freshman year to go abroad as a sophomore.

Sophomores & Juniors
Apply in your sophomore year to do a language and culture program or a
full immersion program in your junior year. If you wish to study in a foreign
language, you must have the required language prerequisites prior to your
departure.

Seniors
To go abroad in your senior year, you should complete all your major requirements or plan to take courses meeting your remaining requirements while abroad. It is possible to graduate while abroad, but close consultation with your advisors is essential.

Transfer students
Students are eligible to participate as early as their first quarter at UCSB. Visit the EAP web site for more information .

What classes should I take?
The easiest department requirement to fulfill on EAP is probably the 8 units of art history. By looking in EAP Course Catalog you will get an idea of the incredible number of art history courses UC students have taken in around the world.

Studio art courses are also available abroad but you must select courses that would substitute for equivalent courses offered through the department at UCSB. Some examples of upper-division coursework past UCSB Art majors have taken on EAP include:

• drawing, painting, photography and sculpture in France,
• video and photomedia in Australia,
• handmade paper in Costa Rica,
• print-making in Spain, and
• mixed media in Hong Kong.

Investigate your opportunities thoroughly and be flexible when planning what specific classes you want to take. As at UCSB, particular courses are not offered every term or even every year. Make an appointment with the undergraduate advisor to discuss the best EAP options for you.

Keep in mind that at least 20 units of upper-division major coursework (or
12 upper-division minor units) must be completed in residence at UCSB
along with other residence requirements. Consult an advisor in the College of Letters & Science for more information.

How do I get started?

Begin by identifying your goals for study abroad and then consult the EAP web pages (http://eap.ucop.edu/) to identify appropriate EAP programs. To find programs which offer particular disciplines or to search courses taken by EAP students over the last 5 years by subject, keyword and/or location, explore the resources found under Program and Course Search. Navigate to host universities’ web sites on the available links to learn more about the schools and their departments.

Stop by the EAP office at 2431 South Hall. Peer advisors who have recently returned from studying abroad as well as staff advisors are eager to answer your questions.

Go see your department Undergraduate Advisor and a College of Letters & Science advisor to discuss major, general education, residence and other requirements.
