Study Abroad for Computer Science Majors

line

The Department of Computer Science encourages its students to consider
studying abroad through the UC Education Abroad Program. Computer science
is increasingly an international field. Knowledge in the discipline is being developed throughout the world, and in the course of their careers, many computer scientists will find themselves working abroad or collaborating overseas. Since many firms are international, there is increasing demand for computer scientists with cross-cultural skills.

Why study abroad?
Opportunities for enhancing your understanding of computer science in other countries abound at UCSB. Exceptional students are encouraged to pursue this avenue for either a term or a full academic year, particularly in the upper division.

Study abroad can help you:

  • Take advantage of unique academic, experiential, and coursework opportunities in computer science.
  • Participate in a different educational system and get a new perspective on the discipline of computer science.
  • Improve critical thinking skills.
  • Advance your cross-cultural and problem-solving skills.
  • Expand your world view by experiencing another culture firsthand.
  • Develop self-confidence and independence.
  • Prepare for a career in an internationally competitive world.
  • Enhance resumes and/or applications for graduate school.

Where should I study abroad?
Programs conducted in English generally provide coursework that integrates well in the UCSB CS curriculum. Some examples of programs that provide instruction in English are Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. However, students with sufficient language proficiency can take CS classes in the language of the host university in such as Costa Rica, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Germany, Chile, and Sweden.

To help you choose an appropriate program abroad, visit Program Options in Engineering on the EAP website. If you wish simply to fulfill general education requirements abroad, consider a summer program. You can search for appropriate summer programs through Program Search found on the EAP web site. There are many programs available, including China, England, Italy, Korea, and Mexico.

CS students MUST meet with the College EAP advisor prior to studying abroad. Email: EAP@engineering.ucsb.edu to make an appointment.

When should I study abroad?
While it is possible for CS majors to go abroad at almost any point in the academic careers, in most cases either the junior year (or a portion thereof) or
the summer before or after the junior year fits best with the structure of the major. All students should consult with the CS Undergraduate Advisor to discuss timely completion of major requirements.

What classes should I take?
EAP students automatically earn UCSB credit for the work they complete abroad. However, application of credit to major requirements is subject to the
discretion of the department. A study plan that consists of the equivalents of UCSB’s junior year CS courses, or, alternatively, one that is taken in the summer that covers general education requirements, provides the most seamless opportunities for our students. Students are encouraged to review their course choices with the Undergraduate Advisor to maximize the number of EAP units they may apply towards their major.

How do I get started?

Visit Program Options in Engineering on the EAP website. To find programs which offer particular disciplines or to search courses taken by EAP students over the last 5 years by subject, keyword and/or location, explore the resources found under Program and Course Search. Navigate to host universities’ web sites on the available links to learn more about the schools and their departments. Make an appointment with the College EAP advisor by email: EAP@engineering.ucsb.edu.

Once you have researched your options, speak to a student peer advisor at the EAP Campus Office, located at 2431 South Hall, to get an application and more information about your future host country.
