Study Abroad for Electrical and Computer Engineering Majors

line

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (“ECE”) is strongly
supportive of its students pursuing opportunities for international educational
experiences through the UC Education Abroad Program. ECE is a diverse discipline that combines the latest advances in many different areas of technology, often involving cooperative international design and manufacturing efforts. Engineering firms both large and small depend critically on multinational operations, and engineers with cross-cultural experiences and fluency in multiple
languages are increasingly in demand. International study through EAP is an
excellent opportunity to develop the skill set appropriate to the new age of
globalization.

EAP host countries that offer study opportunities in electrical and computer engineering in English:

•Australia
•Hong Kong
•Ireland
•Japan
•New Zealand
•Singapore
•Sweden
•United Kingdom

Why study abroad?
Opportunities for enhancing your understanding of electrical engineering
and computer engineering throughout the world are available through EAP. Students are encouraged to pursue this avenue for either a term or a full academic year, particularly in the upper division.

Study abroad can help you:

  • Take advantage of unique academic, experiential, and coursework
    opportunities.
  • Participate in a different educational system and get a new perspective on the discipline of engineering.
  • Improve your critical thinking skills.
  • Advance your cross-cultural and problem-solving skills.
  • Expand your world view by experiencing another culture firsthand.
  • Develop self-confidence and independence.
  • Prepare for a career in an internationally competitive world.
  • Enhance your resume and/or applications for graduate school.

Nearly all participants say their EAP experiences were life-changing,
career-enhancing, and the highlight of their time at UCSB.

Internship Opportunities
An international internship or research experience will greatly enhance your resume and provide you with valuable skills and contacts to improve your success in the global job market. Many EAP students arrange such opportunities in conjunction with the EAP Study Center in their host country. One EAP student in Japan researched how to compensate for time delay in the transmission of audio data through the Internet so that a listener can hear time-consistent music. Look at the EAP web site for more information.

When should I study abroad?
While it is possible for engineering majors to go abroad at almost any point in their academic careers, in most cases either the junior year (or a portion thereof) or the summer before or after the junior year fits best with the structure of the major. All students should consult with their Undergraduate Advisor to discuss timely completion of major requirements.

Where should I study abroad?
Programs conducted in English generally provide coursework that integrates well in the UCSB engineering curriculum. However, students with sufficient language proficiency can take electrical and computer engineering classes in the language of the host university in Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Sweden.
To help you choose an appropriate program abroad, visit the EAP web site and follow the links to major/discipline and then to engineering.

If you wish simply to fulfill general education requirements abroad, consider a summer program. For a current listing of EAP summer programs, go to the EAP web site or stop by the campus EAP office. Summer programs have been offered in: China, Denmark, France, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

All engineering majors MUST meet with the College EAP advisor prior to studying abroad. Email: EAP@engineering.ucsb.edu to make an appointment.

What classes should I take?
EAP students automatically earn UCSB credit for the work they complete abroad. However, application of credit to major requirements is subject to the discretion of the department. A study plan that consists of the equivalents of what you would have taken at UCSB during the time you intend to be abroad will help your planning process. Keep in mind that just like selecting courses at UCSB, there is no guarantee that the courses you want to take abroad will be available for enrollment. Planning and flexibility are essential to success. Students are encouraged to review their course choices with the Undergraduate Advisor to maximize the number of EAP units they may apply towards their major.

How do I get started?
Begin by consulting the EAP web pages (http://eap.ucop.edu/) to identify appropriate EAP programs. To find programs which offer engineering or to search courses taken by EAP students over the last 5 years by subject, keyword and/or location, explore the resources found under Program and Course Search.

Navigate to host universities’ web sites on the available links to learn more about the schools, their departments, and their course offerings.

Stop by the EAP office at 2431 South Hall. Peer advisors who have recently returned from studying abroad as well as staff advisors are eager to answer your questions.

Make an appointment with the College EAP advisor by email: EAP@engineering.ucsb.edu.
