"Studying in France gave me a great variety of classes and opportunities I wouldn’t have had at home, and I still stayed on track with my computer science major. I had so many unique experiences in France, and I didn’t have to sacrifice anything academically… I didn’t even have to give up surfing on the weekends!"

The College of Letters & Science and EAP

1. GE Requirements:  To fulfill GE requirements in the College of Letters & Science, EAP courses must be at least 3 quarter units. In addition, refer to the following set of guidelines for the requirements of the College of L&S:

  • Writing Requirement:  In the College of Letters and Science, up to two UCSB and/or EAP courses can be petitioned for the writing requirement.  The course syllabus and your paper(s) must be attached to the petition.
  • Ethnicity Requirement:  This requirement is difficult to fulfill abroad. It can be fulfilled only by a course “that focuses on the history and the cultural, intellectual, and social experience of designated racial minorities and/or ethnic groups in the United States.”  Because this requirement specifically relates to the United States, we caution that courses dealing with minority populations in your host countries will not be acceptable.

2.  Residence Requirement - (EAP courses do not count toward this requirement!)To receive a degree from UCSB, you are required to complete the following while in residence (on campus) at UCSB:

      • 3 academic terms
      • 20 upper division units in your major(s)
      • 12 upper division units in your minor
      • 27 upper-division units in your college
      • 35 of final 45 units or 35 or final 90 units if you go abroad with EAP as a senior

Students who are unable to fulfill all degree requirements while on EAP must return to UCSB and take at least 12 units to comply with the residence requirement and fulfill final degree obligations.
