“If I had to pick the one event in my life that most strongly influenced who I am today, it would without a doubt be my EAP year in Madrid (78/79). The thrill of successfully immersing oneself in a foreign culture, interacting daily with the locals and sharing different values, is an experience that all should be able to have."

Letter from
Faculty Director Michael O'Connell

Dear Alumnae and Alumni,

I hope your study-abroad time is as vivid a memory as my year in Italy has been for me – at that’s more than 40 years ago!  In fact I can’t imagine my life and career without it.  One of my goals as faculty director of UCSB’s Education Abroad Office is to keep in closer touch with our alumni.  I believe our study-abroad time remains for each of us a significant moment in our educations –  and our lives – and I thought you’d enjoy being informed about the progress and new developments in EAP.

Australia

Australia
1995
My year abroad gave me the confidence to reach out to new, very different kinds of people. It also gave me an increased level of self-awareness, both of my individual personality and of my culture in general. These things led directly to my decision to join the Peace Corps a year after graduation. Since graduating in 1996 I have lived only four years in the USA. The rest of the time my husband (and UCSB Alum)and I have lived in Central and South Asia and Eastern Europe.

Australia
1999
I moved back to Australia to study for my MA in Writing.  I had the intention of obtaining residency at the time, but it didn't work.  But I love the country so much, I came back 2 yrs later and should be able to obtain residency in the coming months.

I fell in love when I was abroad. I met a wonderful Aussie man, he chose to come to the US to study for a year. 3 years later we got engaged, and this last summer we got married!

Australia
2004
It enabled me to be a more confident person.  I developed better social skills to interact with people of different backgrounds.  It gave me a great sense of accomplishment. I was more aware of what's going on in the world.  I also traveled to a few different countries during my year abroad, and made many lasting friendships from people all over the world.  My experiences also serve as great conversation topics at cocktail parties.

I met some amazing people and they really influenced the way I look at the world

Australia - Tassie and Townsville
2003
I've known since I was a child I wanted to be a marine scientist, so in essence my choice of major effected my choice of abroad locations. Also, I decided I would go to grad school before I studied abroad, so studying abroad was a choice I made to help get into grad school.  A direct result of my abroad experience? I learned rugby in Tassie, joined the team in Townsville (and met tons of Aussie girls through the team), then played when I returned to UCSB.

I realized that the education I got abroad was the only part of my degree in Zoology that gave me ANY skills that I would need to say I had for getting my first job.  Pretty much feel that is not so much a perk of the EAP program, but a failure in the UCSB curriculum.  I just got lucky.

After a couple years of working the standard corporate jobs in the U.S., I decided to get a job teaching English in South Korea.  I've now been here for almost two months and it's a great experience!  The financial perks of teaching in Korea are doing wonders for erasing my debt back home.  I have to admit I was a bit weary of coming to a country where I knew none of the language, but my year abroad gave me confidence in my ability to travel and live abroad again.  It also sparked an insatiable curiosity in me to learn about other countries and cultures.

Having gone to a neighboring country (Canada) with many similarities, it really gave me an understanding and appreciation of how the UC educational system (and possibly US universities in general)encourages and fosters creative thinking and problem solving in their students. And, of course, it also reinforced the importance of a national healthcare system.

Even though Canada is not considered as abroad as many other countries the amount of diversity that Vancouver had was eye-opening.  I've also maintained friendships from my study abroad experience that I cherish.

There simply isn't the time or space to share everything, so I'll try to mention a few...my studies and real-world experiences significantly shaped my desire to work in the international development or non-profit fields. Accordingly, my first - and current - job at a non-profit in Santa Barbara required a level of Spanish fluency I could not have acquired without being immersed in a Spanish-speaking country. Additionally, studying abroad nurtured my love to travel and familiarize myself with historical and current world affairs - which I try to do often!

When i returned home to Santa Barbara, I immediately began applying for international internships post graduation so I could live abroad again.  I went to Ecuador to work for 6 months and had the space to reflect what i wanted to do post graduation.  I did an internship in an arts organization, worked, and lived simply.  I returned to the U.S. having changed my direction completely.

China

China
1997-1998
After living and meeting so many great friends studying abroad, it opened up my perspective on the world and since college, I have made it a point to travel twice a year abroad. It's changed my life and let me realize that the world is a big fun playground to explore.

China
1999-2000
Continued interest in China and ability to move back there several times over the years.

China
2004-2005
While interviewing for an associate position at a law firm I ended up conversing with one of the firm's partner's in Mandarin.  He had traveled abroad 20 years ago to China and we had gone to the same school.  Not only did this help me establish a connection with that particular partner, but my experiences and language skills impressed other partners as well.  I had similar experiences at other law firms and received lots of offers!

China/Hong Kong University
2005
Studying abroad gave me a new sense of confidence and understanding of what it means to be an independent adult. Breaking away from my comfort zone to live, get around, and travel in a country where I didn't speak or read the language, had a complex transportation system, and where traveling required careful planning and decision-making, I proved to myself that I could do just about anything. After studying abroad I knew that I could be dropped off blindfolded in just about anywhere and learn to interact with others, to speak a new language, and to make my way around. This is the kind of confidence I couldn't have acquired quickly from any other experience.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica
1991
I started a non-profit that provides study abroad experiences for high school students (www.ecologyproject.org), and provides field learning experiences to local residents of Costa Rica, similar to the opportunities I had when an EAP student. I was transformed by my experience as a junior in college, after I had already chosen my major and nearly completed my studies - imagine the impact for young people in high school who could have a similar opportunity!  I credit my abroad experience at UCSB, and especially my instructors Frank Joyce and Jack Longino, with opening a world of opportunity and cultural insight for myself and now thousands of other youth.  Thank you for creating and promoting this program.  It's so critical in our global society to cultivate internationally informed citizens.

I worked for a Latin American PR firm in Miami after college.  It was a great experience and I was able to work there because of the language skills and international experience I acquired abroad.    I am now an AP Spanish teacher and I am able to teach this level due to the skills I acquired abroad.

Costa Rica
2001
Study abroad was truly a transformational experience for me.  My fellow EAPers are still my best friends in this world, my host family is still dear to my heart, and the experiences I had abroad shaped just about everything that I've done since.  After studying abroad in Costa Rica in 2001, I was able to get my first job in part due to my Spanish language skills.  I have since gone on to obtain a masters in international affairs with a concentration in Latin America, taking my interest in the region to a new level. I now work for a prominent foreign policy think tank in Washington, DC. Studying abroad was probably the most important and best decision I've made.

Costa Rica (UCR)
1998-1999
When I got back from Costa Rica, I wanted to continue using my Spanish on a regular basis. I got a job at CLAS tutoring Spanish (and also writing). I loved tutoring so much that that led me to pursue my secondary education teaching credential (in English and Spanish, with a bilingual certification) and M.Ed. through UCSB's TEP. While I'm not currently teaching Spanish, I've been teaching high school for 8 years and truly love it. I still share stories of my study abroad experience in Costa Rica with my students!

Egypt

Summarizing a year in Egypt, I can easily recount for you an endless list of sensory experiences: climbing to the top of Mount Sinai, diving to the bottom of the Red Sea, seeking refuge from Cairo’s chaotic streets in one of her many breathtaking mosques, engaging in conversations with my Egyptian and American peers about religion, culture and politics, forming what I hope are life-long friendships with people I never imagined I’d meet.

Egyptians will tell you “Masr om ad-dunya.” Egypt is the mother of the world. She is. The ancient wonder of the pyramids and temples, the modern shadow of dilapidated apartments teeming with cousins and uncles, the extreme poverty and unbelievable wealth, nearly collide like the 5 lanes of fiat taxis and the donkey pulling a wagon of melons below a skyline of billboards for cell phones and processed cheese.  But I lived there for a year and never once saw a car accident.  Some mysterious power, perhaps the gravitational force of the ezan paralleled with that of the desert sun forms the delicate balance that prevents it all from simply imploding.

Egypt
1983/84
First time I left the State of California and the second time I ever flew on an airplane was in 1983.  I flew to Cairo, Egypt.  I now live and work in Khartoum, Sudan just up the river a bit.  I returned to Cairo in 1995 to work at the Embassy and did so till 1998.  I went on to Sri Lanka, India, Tunis, Saudi Arabia and now am enjoying being back in the Nile Valley in Khartoum.  None of this would have happened without the EAP.  All this because the EAP interview committee decided to give a guy a chance who was desperate to see something other than California.  The financial aid package, loans, and Jeannie Anderson award allowed me to just study without having to work at an outside job for the first time.  It was a magical year.  Thank you for the opportunity.

1992-93
More than I can quantify...Really...Certainly, my career path which involved international development work for more than 12 years - but more importantly, how I do my work - understanding different perspectives, being open to new ideas and experiences, being able to relate to people who are very different than me in mutually affirming ways - the experience has shaped me more than almost anything in my formative years

Step 1

Leslie Gerson- Bordeaux, France 1968-69 continued

Richard Blakely
France/Bordeaux
1962-63
Well, I married a French woman for one thing (the 2nd, and better, time around).  Even more important though, my EAP experience opened my eyes and made me more objective towards my own country, and towards the problems of ethnocentrism in general.

France, Bordeaux
1962-3
Long term friendships with the students in our EAP group.  I have traveled, worked with and maintained contacts with many of them.  The shared experience and world view is the basis of these friendships.

France, Bordeaux
1962-63
Sent to Paris to monitor the Vietnam (Indochina) Peace Talks in 1972-73 for a coalition of American and International Peace Organizations

France, Bordeaux
1964-1965
I spent the academic year 1969-1970 in Geneva Switzerland on a scholarship working on my PhD dissertation on the French philosopher Simone Weil. I met my future wife in Geneva and consequently since 1973 have never lived in America but remained abroad.

France, Bordeaux
1968-69
I joined the Department of State, Foreign Service in 1976, which I would probably never have considered were it not for EAP.  I now speak 5 languages, have lived in several countries and visited many more.  I continue to travel the world inspecting our embassies even though I have officially retired.

France/Bordeaux
1968-69
I had not intended to major in French, but finished my major in Bordeaux and so, declared it.  (I fell behind in Spanish which I had been studying before and gave it up after taking another course - with some difficulty in speaking - upon my return.)  Had I not majored in French and continued in French in grad school, it is certain that I would not have spent most of my professional life as a university teacher of French.    I have had a continuing relationship 40 years after my year abroad with the French family that "adopted" me, thanks to the arrangements made by the local program director, Louis Garcia.  I have returned to see them every time I've been in France (11 times) since then.    That was the year that I learned to live on my own.  Lonely as it sometimes was, I grew up that year.    Although I had lived in Belgium as an early adolescent and knew already that I wanted a life that allowed me to live in two cultures, the study abroad experience confirmed that.  I have spent only 4 years of my life since then when I didn't function in French and in English on a daily basis.

France/Bordeaux
1971-72
I met my husband on the program and we have been married for 35 years.  The EAP experience influenced his postgraduate study and as a result he entered the graduate program at UC Berkeley.  I got a job there and am about to retire after 34 years.

France/Bordeaux
1972/73
After completing undergraduate work at UCSB, I was hired as a flight attendant for TWA. Having experienced living abroad whet my appetite for more, and the international travel that was part of the job attracted me. The language skills acquired during my year in Bordeaux served me well as an onboard translator and allowed me to work flight routes usually reserved for more senior employees. At 23 I was flying JKF-CDG regularly, staying in nice hotels, and enjoying Parisian culture to boot-what a deal!

France/Bordeaux
1978-79
20 years after being abroad I was working for an international technical training company in the Publications department, managing the production of course materials. We had developed a custom computer program to assemble and print these materials and were rolling it out to operating units internationally, including the Paris unit. I was the only person qualified to lead this project, and traveled to Paris to deliver the training and help the Paris unit adopt the new technology. While they had assured me that the staff was fluent in English, I quickly learned they were far from it. It took me a few minutes to gather the specialized vocabulary, but I was very successful in completing the training in French. It was exhausting to immerse myself again so thoroughly after 20 years of not working in French, but I did it. I attribute that to the fluency I gained while living in France for that one year.

France
1977-78
My husband is French.  I met him during my year abroad.....I rented a room in his mother's house.  We have been married 28 years.  My year abroad certainly made a very happy difference in my personal life!

France
1979-80
My whole world widened and changed with my year abroad. It led to further study and working abroad - in all, nine years abroad and many travels. My year abroad led me to change my original career goal of being a lawyer to teaching ESL, which I have done both abroad and in the States for 23 years.

France- Bordeaux
1973-74
As a lawyer for 28 years in Downtown LA, I have served on the Board of the French Chamber of Commerce for several years. I also have enjoyed representing French, German, Swiss, Japanese, and Australian companies in California.

France
1992
I was hired by my current employer in part due to my living abroad.  She appreciates and seeks out employees from a variety of cultural backgrounds.  My experience abroad in France was intriguing to my supervisor and she told me at the time that she appreciated the experience and perspective that I have on a global level.

France
1992
Obtained a job teaching in Poland through a friend I met during my EAP year.

France
1985-1986
My increased facility with languages or just the perspective that trying to speak in another language and to communicate is more important than just giving up and speaking English.  I also learned that it's okay to look silly if I got it wrong, at least I tried.

France
1994-1995
I work for a large automotive company and we have a European affiliate based in Belgium.  I have been asked to translate some French documents/e-mails and assist with communication with our European contacts.

France
1997-1998
A completely new understanding of what it means to be an American and an absolute love of travel.

France
2002-2003
My experience living abroad in Grenoble, France opened my world perspective and gave me the confidence to adapt to a different culture.  Today, I am serving for the Peace Corps in the People's Republic of China.  I owe my international spirit to my first experience with EAP.

France - Toulouse
2004-2005
One specific example that I'll share came during my spring break trip. I decided to go with two fellow EAP-ers to travel around Morocco for the two weeks. I was pretty apprehensive, as it would be the first non-Western country I had been to. However, as soon as I arrived, I was immediately welcomed by strangers and treated with such hospitality. I made some amazing local friends in that short time who completely changed my world view. If I went by everything I had seen on the news, I would have assumed that I would have been hated there just because I'm American. Nothing could have been further from the truth. I constantly now tell people that travel is the best teacher.

France Bordeaux
1993-1994
my best friends from college are from my EAP program.

FRANCE Grenoble
1998-1999
One recent example is that I moved into a new apartment and met my neighbors.  It turns out one of my neighbors is from France and from an area close to where I was studying.

France Grenoble
1975-76
I made life-long friends whose children are now friends with my children and our families have visited back and forth. I have traveled much more than I might have if I had not had the experience of living in another country. I do not see language or culture as barriers to communication.

France, Bordeaux

LIFE LONG FRIENDS AND BUSINESS CONTACTS

France, Bordeaux
1977-78
I developed that have continued over the years.  Not only have I been back a number of times over the years, but it's passing on to the next generation. I have now hosted the daughter of a French friend here in the US!

France, Bordeaux
2003-2004
When I signed up to go France through EAP during my second year at UCSB, I was unsure about my major and the direction my studies were going in.  Spending a year abroad helped me discover my true passion for literature and foreign language--so much so that I have returned to France twice since then!  I am currently living in Aix-en-Provence as part of a TA exchange with the University of Virginia, where I am currently a PhD student.  I heartily thank EAP for providing such a rewarding opportunity.

France, Bordeaux
2004-2005
My fiance is the brother of one of the other UC students that I became friends with during my time abroad.

France, Bordeaux
85-86
Broader world perspective, direct experience of cultures I had only studied or read about, strong sense of history. After 6 years of high school and college level French, I arrived in France to discover that I could barely understand the language as spoken in its native land. By the end of the year, I had mastered the language. Very enlightening to learn how others view America and Americans. Spent my first year after college backpacking around the world. My experience during my year abroad helped give me the practical knowledge and confidence to do that.

France, Bordeaux/Paris
1971-72/73-74
Coping skills;greater independence

France, Pau/Paris
1976
Developed long term friendships. And I believe it helped get me into a highly competitive graduate program ( a high percentage of my graduate classmates studied abroad).

France/Bordeaux
2000-2001
I have traveled non-stop since my year abroad. Living in a foreign culture and meeting so many diverse and interesting people was addictive and now I always seek out adventure. I know that I could live anywhere for a year or two and make it my home.

France/Bordeaux
1962-63
I was sent to France for 2 months to monitor the International Peace talks between North and South Vietnam and the US in 1973 and report back to a coalition of peace organizations in the US.

I met my husband as a result of my studies in Bordeaux, France.  I obtained my first job at ARCO Solar as a result of my fluency in French.  Now I run my own company selling language learning systems to Foreign Language teachers.

France/EAP
1992-93
i have friends all over europe and cherish those long-lasting friendships and hope to introduce these folks to my own children this coming summer.

France/Grenoble
1979-1980
I am part of a broad group of friends who studied abroad at the same time and after 30 years we continue to form a close and supportive network. These friendships, shared experiences and closeness has enriched my life since 1979 something more valuable than any job or possession I own. I did not go on the program with the expectation of forming friendships with American's, but it was an unexpected and as the years go by, most valuable, result of my study abroad experience.

France/Grenoble
1983-84
I gained more confidence in myself, in my ability to make decisions, and in my independence. I learned that I can trust myself, and my instincts.

France/Grenoble
1988-89
Six months after graduating, I went on a student work visa through BUNAC and worked in a pub in Scotland.  Living abroad again totally on my own (no EAP-type program) was something that I was able to do only because I had my EAP experience.    Additionally, my friends from EAP continue to be the only people, after 20 years, that I really stay in touch with from college.  I still visit, and consider 2 of my EAP friends to be among a small handful of best friends in the world.  The study-abroad experience brought us together in a very special way.    Finally, I am a professor now, and would *really* like to participate in teaching for/advising students abroad.  My elder care responsibilities haven't allowed me to do this yet, but eventually I will be able to, and I can't wait!  Absolutely that is a result of having studied abroad.

France/Grenoble
1999-2000
I began working in study abroad immediately after graduating university and have been in the field for 8 years. I also decided to learn another language and have lived abroad since traveling. I travel a lot and am currently taking a year and a half to travel the world and volunteer. I would not have considered any of this if I had not studied abroad.

France/Lyon
1991-1992
Very early in my career, I was asked to participate two different projects abroad.  Both opportunities were a result of my education abroad.  One of the projects was a fairly high profile project that I was asked to lead specifically because of my French language skills combined with my work experience.  Both of these unusual opportunities helped to propel my career forward.

France/Lyon
1991-1992
I worked for the French Embassy for 2 years a few years after graduation and spoke only French in the office. I have been back to France several times. My younger sister did EAP in Lyon 2 years after I did (through UC Berkeley) - my mother also did EAP the very first year EAP went to France (the Bordeaux program).    I am very sure that participating in EAP also helped me get into business school.

France/Lyon
2002-2003
I developed so many wonderful relationships as a result of my year abroad.  I still keep in touch with many of these people and feel as if I have "family" all over the world.

France/Pau-Bordeaux
1970-1971
I have kept a life long friend and we have visited each other on a regular basis and our children and friends have been able to do exchange stays with our families.  I worked in a Club Med as a direct result of speaking French.  I travel easily and can pick up the other Romance languages.  My political perspective has always taken into consideration how other people may view things differently and that there are unintended consequences in other countries by our behavior in the USA.

France/Pau-Poitiers
1980-81
During my year in France, my parents decided to come visit me once. It was the first time they had ever traveled abroad. It's been nearly 30 years (though it still seems like yesterday), and that experience led them to travel to virtually every country on the globe. For the last couple of years, they invited me and my wife along - gratis. So, if it weren't for the UCSB study abroad program, neither me nor my parents would be worldly travelers!

Many of the friendships I cultivated abroad are among the most important of my life.  I am also now in graduate school, due largely in part to the things I observed and learned about my academic career and myself while living in Paris.

I learned independence, who the 'real me' was in a stronger light, gained confidence, my resume was a lot more impressive (to have taken initiative, and done something so wonderful and unique), I learned French that I use TODAY...12 years later!! I'm so happy.

I decided to become a French major because of my year in France. Unfortunately, I do not use my French in my career, but I have always remained a francophile.  As a result of my positive experiences in France, I have returned numerous times with my husband and later with my husband and 2 children. I have been able to expand their way of looking at the world so that they now value traveling abroad and the appreciation of foreign cultures.

As you stated on e-mail, it was a transformational experience.  I came back a different, and better, person.  A fun thing we are doing now is hosting the teenage son of a friend I met while in Germany.  He needs to improve his English, so they sent him to us for a while.  It's the pay-it-forward idea come to life.

I made life-long friends from my experience in EAP; nearly 30(!) years later I am still in touch with UC friends from that year and I can still speak/read/write/dream in German. It influenced me to go on to grad school (Thunderbird) where I landed a career in int'l business & besides traveling to visit customers, spent 10 years living in Asia Pacific (despite my German lang background). It was life-changing and I was thrilled last year to have the opportunity to go to Goettingen, see my old dorm room and the town where I learned so much.

Studying in Germany expanded my world view and was a stepping stone in many different ways.  Specifically I was able to obtain a minor in German Studies, which opened the door for me to intern with the U.S. Dept of State in Vienna, Austria.  This experience opened further doors for me professionally.  Since EAP Germany, I have continued to pursue life as a global citizen and am indebted to this priceless experience.

Germany/EAP German Lang
1978-1979
I studied Germanic Languages and Literature at University of Goettingen 1978-1979. I met a German man while studying. I returned after my Senior Year to live in Nuernberg and we moved to Munich. I was hired the following Spring April of 1981 at Siemens Corporation and worked for 14 years in Munich, Germany utilizing my German language/English translation skills in various divisions of Siemens: Military Joint Ventures, International Human Resources and International Accounts with Siemens and Rolm Systems, Executive Briefings and Welcome of International Visitors to Siemens Munich. I traveled extensively while living abroad in all parts of Western Europe and my parents visited me for exciting trips together such as Italy, Spain, Greece, France, England. My Father and Mother studied German and my Father was a European History Teacher in Palo Alto speaking 4 languages fluently, this increased my love of history and the study of languages/diversity of cultures and understanding peoples from around the Globe. When you speak another language you are connected with the human network where there is no border/boundary or difference in race or color. I traveled to every country in Western Europe and many of the Greek islands, former Jugoslavia, Hungary, Turkey and other exciting countries. I also visited Egypt for 6 weeks on a motorbike, most of my friends have never visited the continent of Africa. I have built deep long lasting international relationships having worked for Siemens Corporation and I continue to remain in touch with all my friends traveling back to Munich for vacations and language enhancements.  Upon return to California in 1994, Siemens transferred me to Santa Clara campus and I continued to work for Siemens until August 2003, eventually over 22 years for the same multi-international Corporation!    My international study aboard and return to work at Siemens Corporation has strongly affected the success and development of my entire life today. With my fluency in German and secondary languages/understanding of both French and Italian and intercultural background/history/family/education, I am an unique asset to Global Corporate Companies beyond the experience of my normal friends. Recently I worked at Cisco Systems as their Global Onboarding Registration Manager for Sales New Hires from around the world and due to my international background, working at Siemens, traveling to all parts of the Western Europe/Africa/Mexico, my study work life connections made a "great difference" in the first impression experience for the Sales New Hires at Cisco Systems!!

The year abroad naturally strengthened my communication skills in German but also in English, my native language.  Why?  Living abroad helped me to listen more closely and appreciate other points of view -two ingredients to good communication. This has helped me personally and professionally.  I continue my study of German by reading, listening to German television and keeping in touch with colleagues from my days there over 30 years ago.  In 2006, I visited Goettingen with my wife and spent some time with my German buddy I've kept in contact with since we were neighbors in the dormitory.

I ended up double-majoring at UCSB in Business Economics and German Studies, and going on for my Masters (MBA) in International Mgmt at Thunderbird, the #1 school in international Mgmt. This was all as a direct result of my time in Germany as a Junior in college.  Two years ago my EAP group organized a 10 year reunion, and about 80% of us showed up - friends from over 2000 miles away made the trip - that's how much our year abroad affected all of our lives.

I am a graduate of Harvard Law School, and I know that international experience made my application to Harvard Law School stand out. While abroad, I made life-enriching friendships, helped illiterate refugees, learned ballroom dancing, traveled extensively and gained confidence in my ability to navigate the world and its people. Fluency in German made it easy for me to land a job at a law firm in Switzerland during law school - international experience is so vital in today's global economy, and the Swiss law firm experience made it easier for me to get a great job out of law school. All this career success can be directly traced back to EAP! Also, I am married to a European, which I also attribute to international perspectives I gained while abroad.

I made friends with a German student who has become my very best friend in life. For several years now we talk every Sunday on the telephone. Also it opened my mind to other people, other ways of life and fueled a curiosity and love of travel.

Aside from mastery in the German language it was the empowerment I received from the concept that I was a part of something more profound and worthy of respect outside of being simply an American exchange student...I was a member of the global community and a citizen of the world.  I attribute my international friendships and professional achievements directly to the knowledge/experiences I obtained during my year abroad with EAP.

Multiple students from abroad living with our family while going to school. Quite a few from Germany.    Ongoing relationships with German friends from that year.  We're all entering the retirement years together now!    Got me to really persuade my daughter to go a year on the EAP (Madrid 2000).  She was initially reluctant.  Now she travels more than I do and spent two years after college living and working in Prague.  Then to the Monterey Institute of International Studies (I hope she got this survey too).    Enhanced my chances of getting into medical school (I had worried that the year away would put me behind and I might not get in).

I ended up keeping my major in German and and adding a dual one in linguistics in large part due to my time abroad.  After UCSB, I knew I could live alone abroad, so I did a Fulbright English assistantship in Austria for a year.  Then did graduate school at UCLA, combining my two undergrad degrees into an MA and PhD in Germanic Linguistics.  Knowing the immense value of study abroad, I eagerly lead a group of University of Alabama students on a summer abroad program this past summer 2008 to Austria.  Also as a result of my Goettingen year, I still enjoy the friendship of my host family.  Just sent them a letter with pictures this week!

My entire life changed after studying abroad.  Studying abroad helped me make new friends that even now, 7 years later I call my best friends.  I met someone that I dated for several years. Israel

Israel
1989
My year abroad was the first time in my life I experienced living as a minority; this was an extremely eye-opening experience.

Israel
1982-1983
The Junior Year Abroad program was the fulfillment of a dream for me and, truly, a transformational experience.  I am thrilled that the UC system is reinstituting the EAP program in Israel.  In particular, I felt very lucky to have had the UC program support while in country, as compared to students who were there independently.    The EAP experience broadened by perspective and confidence as a student and young adult in many respects.  It provided me with experiences that could not be replicated in any other program.  As my major was not well reflected in the Hebrew University curriculum, I had to create my own independent study program while there in order to obtain course credits in my major.  In addition to learning a great deal about my independent study subject (which focused on the use of solar energy in Israel), I learned research skills and the value of networking and tracking down resources that I put to direct use in completing my Senior Thesis upon my return to UCSB.  My Senior Thesis topic and breadth of study was directly and positively influenced by the independent study work I did through EAP.    Having participated in an EAP was a conversation starter as I interviewed for my first job (as well as every job thereafter).  It is a challenge that impresses prospective employers as it reflects a candidate's independence and initiative.

I learned how to live with and have respect for people whose views I fundamentally oppose and disagree with.

1986-1987
My occupation - I worked for the Jewish Federation system (Columbus Jewish Federation in Ohio and Jewish Federation of Rhode Island) as a fundraiser for over 8 years, and am currently the Development Director for The Hillels of Illinois.

1990 - 1991
I gained a deeper understanding of who I am and my heritage.

Israel
1994-95
My interest and confidence in traveling  I went to many other countries while I was in Israel: Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Spain, France, Switzerland, Czech, Italy, Holland & Greece.  One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is taking kids to Israel each year.  It disturbs me greatly that EAP cancelled the Israel program for 20 yr olds, while I am still taking 13 yr olds, as are 17 other Los Angeles schools.

1997-98
I learned Hebrew, which allowed me to speak Hebrew with a couple in Santa Barbara, train their son for his Bar Mitzvah, tend to their organic farm, find my passion growing foods, sold lemons to a health food store, met my wife through a customer at the store, now have a family that grows some of our own food.

1999-2000
I began working in the field of social services because of my encounters with social justice issues.

Israel, Hebrew University

It took me thousands of miles of travel to meet my closest friends from UCSB and other UC schools - and it was well worth it.

Italy

Barbara and Ronald Reis and son Mike in Italy

A big part of Mike's excitement about studying in Italy was rooted in the general enthusiasm in our household for all things Italian. As you  know, we have not raised scientists here. All three kids are creative  types who genuinely appreciate fine art, art history and contemporary  design There is no better place to study all three than Roma.. Add to  that the fact that the kids are half Italian and have fond memories of  their grandparents and their Italian food, language, holiday  traditions, Catholic faith, sense of style and appreciation of music  and --and there you have it.

Mike happily anticipated the semester abroad with no worries because he trusted that the UC would provide a quality education worth leaving  beautiful Santa Barbara. We trusted his ability to live independently,  make sound choices and stay in touch. Through Skype and his detailed  blog (www.mikereis.com), we felt more in touch with his life that we  did when he was at UCSB. He gave us regular updates on classes (some  of which were held at places like the Vatican, Villa Borghese and the many churches in Rome). He found the coursework to be challenging and  very worthwhile.

On his return home, four and a half months later, he  seemed personally amazed at what he had seen and done. His nightstand  is piled high with museum books, his Italian language software program  and small trinkets he purchased as mementos. He also now has no  tolerance for weak coffee, chain store pizza, ice cream (no gelato?)  and evening meals before 9pm. Our favorite picture of his sojourn is  one taken as soon as he arrived. He snapped a shot of his luggage on  the sidewalk outside his apartment with the Colosseum clearly visible  in the background. Mike seemed so immersed in his life there that we began to worry if he  would return! He now tells us that the semester was the perfect length  of time to be there. He experienced both winter and spring ala Rome,  and had two breaks from classes to explore outside of the Eternal City. He learned to navigate all public transportation and to  formulate alternate plans when the buses or trains were on strike,  make a simply delicious dish of pasta and became rather an expert on  Caravaggio. He also now appreciates his queen-size bed at home having  stretched out his 6' 2" + frame on what amounted to a cot for nearly  four months.

We were fortunate to be able to provide this opportunity for Mike, who  considered his EAP study to be a life-changing experience. His world  is suddenly much broader, and discussions of the world economy,  history, the arts and global politics now have relative, enhanced  meaning. A gift of support for such reality-based rather than conventional theoretical education is just that--a gift.

Italy/Trento
2003-2004
Save for a brief visit to England, I had never been to Europe before my year abroad.  After graduating university, I felt an insatiable urge to return to Italy.  I did an EFL teaching course in Rome and then returned to Trento.  The friends I made during my year abroad helped me find a place to live, as well as a job.  I left Trento more than two years ago, but am still living in Italy.  I don't know if I'll be here for good, but it's been a wonderful 3+ years so far.

Thanks to my experience with EAP, I decided to go to law school. I even mentioned it on my law school application essay. Unfortunately, my decision for law school focused on how incompetent the UC-Rome Administration was in a variety of areas, and my success in forcing the relocation of a possible sociopathic housemate who mentally and verbally abused his actual roommate. Even with the bad luck of inept administration and the fact that I did not feel safe in my own apartment for two-thirds of the time, I would wholeheartedly encourage everyone to study abroad.  I had an incredible time studying Ancient Rome with my own eyes, met good friends I am still in constant contact with, and relive the positive memories everyday.

This comment is indirectly related to this question:  I think it is important for EAP to inform students of the likelihood of being taken advantage of by foreigners while abroad. Not in the sense of pickpocketing or by someone they don't know, but rather, by people they will meet and develop friendships and / or relationships with. Through my experience, I not only witnessed American students being conned by locals, but I myself experienced avoidable circumstances. Had past study abroad students spoken up about negative experiences while abroad, I feel I would have been more prepared to see the signs of what was going on. I came to find that past study abroad students in my same program from previous years (and later came to find students that arrived after my program) experienced similar circumstances with the same group of people I came in contact with. I did my part by informing the local EAP Study Centre. Once I left I communicated essential information to be distributed to the current students at the time in the 2002-2003 program. I hope that the information has continued to be circulated long after I informed them as I know that type of experience can leave a negative and long lasting impact on a student's experience.

Participation in EAP has significantly impacted the entire course of my life.  I actually did EAP twice!  First in Italy - this blew open my ideas of the world and of my self.  It was so great that I decided to start studying Spanish upon my return to UCSB and went to Mexico the next year for the SFE program.  I loved Mexico City, and did my field project with a women's health cooperative in Chiapas.  I had been considering doing Peace Corps after graduation, and in many ways the short experience in Chiapas was more challenging and eye-opening than Peace Corps (which I did in Honduras after graduating from UCSB).  While I had always been interested in social justice issues in a vague way, my time in Mexico really opened my eyes to things, and I was so inspired by the women I worked with.  After Peace Corps, I went to Law School. I had a much easier time than others getting into Law School, and getting public interest internships and jobs while there because of my spanish and international experience.  After clerking for a Judge, I became a Public Defender.  I speak Spanish every single day.  I absolutely feel that I am more attuned to cultural and language issues in my work as a result of my time in both Italy and Mexico.  EAP made me a very confident traveler, and I have traveled to many other countries.  I feel very comfortable in the most remote hamlet of Latin America.    Also, several of the friends I made through EAP & studying abroad are still among my closest friends.

Overall a good conversational piece. Seems to be a topic during job interviews that keeps employers interested. Also, it has helped with traveling, skills abroad, and desire to return. It gives you an added air of self-confidence knowing you were able to live and study abroad.

There is not enough space to tell you everything.  While at Doshisha University in Kyoto, I not only learned about myself and Japan, but I also met my husband.  I ended up moving back to Japan for another three and a half years after I graduated.  My experience at Doshisha helped me get an English teaching position in the most highly rated public high school in Osaka.  Then after I returned to the states, my ability to speak, read and write Japanese helped me enter a PhD program in molecular and cellular pharmacology.  Through my studies at Doshisha I was also able to join a Doshisha Alumni organization in the New York area, (where I live,) and make many valuable connections.  I am also able to evaluate myself and my country much more open mindedly.  After I graduate with my PhD I am hoping to do a post-doc in Japan.  Lastly, I now have a beautiful baby girl with an American and Japanese passport and all this was because of EAP.  I can't thank you enough.

Where to start!  I worked in the EAP office my senior year, went back to Japan to teach as a Monbusho English Fellow (now the J.E.T. program) after graduating UCSB, worked as a production coordinator for a Japanese firm from 1985-87, and received a Masters in Pacific International Affairs from UCSD in 1989.  I am currently a full time educator teaching foreign languages (Spanish and Japanese) and geography.  To say my year abroad was foundational is an understatement!

My circle of friends has grown tremendously with long lasting contacts I developed through the Education Abroad Program.  The experiences and friendship will forever be a part of who I am and are now a part of my family's experiences.

Japan/Economic Development

I went back to Japan as an English teacher the year after I graduated. Now I live in France (four year running) with my French significant other, whom I meet because I was more interested in making friends with foreigners and understanding them after I returned from Japan.

Deep connection and admiration for Japan.  For example, anytime someone mentions Japan or if I read about Japan online or in the news, I think about my study abroad experiences there.  I still think about Japan on a daily basis.

I have met so many people while on the program, it has been well over 5 years and I still keep in contact with most of them.  It is a life changing experience for sure.    My job requires me to travel a lot (even international), and every city I have been to I have had a friend to meet with.  Then again, I traveled a lot all over the world even before the EAP program, but this only made things better in the future.

I expected to get contacts from the country I studied in, but what surprised me was the opportunity to interact with people from all over the world who also took the study abroad program.  After I came back, I found myself networking with people from all over.  This opportunity is invaluable to anyone with a global career.

Mexico

Mexico
1981-1982
The direct result is that I married a Mexican and have been living in Mexico for the last 26 years.  My experience with EAP was great not including the fact that I continued my relationship with my now, husband while I was studying in Mexico. I would recommend it to all students.  My oldest son, although he was not able to study at a UC campus like myself, participated in a similar program from his college.

A love of the Spanish language and Mexican culture. To this day, I still have fond memories and look forward to getting back to those parts of the world

Mexico City

The intensive language program that I was immersed into was for teachers.  This unique opportunity opened many doors in my career.  I travel every summer and lead youth groups to different parts of the world.  Every student should take advantage of this opportunity.

Mexico City/Semester

I would have never been hired in my first teaching job if I hadn't completed my study abroad program.  My semester abroad gave me the ability to pass a test to get a supplementary credential in Spanish (without having a Spanish major or minor).  The department that I wanted to teach in (history) didn't have enough classes for me to teach, so if I hadn't had the credential in Spanish, I would have never been hired.

Italy/Bologna & Mexico SFE
(Italy) 1989-90 & (Mexico)1991
EAP made me a very confident traveller, and I have travelled to many other countries.  I feel very comfortable in the most remote hamlet of Latin America.    Also, several of the friends I made through EAP & studying abroad are still among my closest friends.

I went abroad my last semester in college, and so had almost completed my degree in Psychology. Having lived abroad, though, I decided that I wanted to foucs my career in international business. After graduation, I sought out a job with an privately owned international company. I am now working as an International Financial Analyst, and my company is paying for me to complete my MBA with a focus in International Business. My experience really changed my life for the better.

Living and going to school in Maastricht via EAP allowed me to meet many people from all over the world.  I still have strong relationships four years later with my international friends that I lived with in "The Guesthouse."  The Guesthouse was so great because it was set up similar to a dorm, but had more of the apartment feel since you share kitchens, allowing you to cook and share meals with your neighbors.    Having these bonds has allowed me the opportunity to travel back to Europe in 2008 and stay with friends in their home country, and catch up on where we all are at currently in our lives.    In short, EAP changed my life. I never dreamed of having the opportunity to live an a foreign country for 5 months and create bonds with people from places like Paris, Budapest, Barcelona, Rome, and England. It has given me the confidence to travel alone, and truly ignited the flame for a future of traveling ahead.

Studying abroad may not get you a job, but it definitely makes your resume stand out. Interviewers often notice my experience and contribute characteristics of independence and openness to me.

2004
The reason I chose to go to New Zealand was that my father is originally from New Zealand. Going to university in NZ allowed me to come to know that side of the family and quite a bit more about myself in the process. I finally understood that there are other people in the world who don't care what kind of car you drive and what the phrase 'in the wops' means and how delicious Marmite is.

I'm currently a parent of young children and my husband and I are hosting an international au pair.  Our decision to host an au pair was made in part due to our belief in the importance of introducing cross-cultural experiences to our children early in life.  Our beliefs in the value of cross-cultural experiences were a direct result of our personal experiences living abroad.

I was raised in a bi-cultural and bi-literate environment, so I believe I had a head start. However, living in a country that was so different from that of the US, in its history, culture, and political perspectives, provided me the opportunity to experience life from another set of eyes and mindset. When situations emerge that I disagree with or don't understand, the first thing I ask myself is, 'I wonder why that person/society believes and acts the way they do.'  This does not cause me to abandon my beliefs, but I am more able to imagine other perspectives and know how to go about searching for more meaning in the other. This process makes me more tolerant and open to reaching mutual understandings that inevitably lead to better decisions and indeed, advancement of society, albeit bit by bit.

My Russian language skills improved dramatically,  something I could not have gotten in Santa Barbara. The people from the different UC campuses I studied with are still some of my greatest friends today.  The friends I made in Moscow are also still in my life.  Moscow remains close to my heart,  I still go there at least every few years,  it is part of who I am.

I became more confident in myself. My ability to speak Russian vastly improved, especially in my ability to speak "off the cuff." Although I am not pursuing a graduate degree in Slavic Studies, my experience taking a political science class at the Russian State Archives convinced me of the international significance of historical preservation and am now completing my graduate studies to become an archivist.

Following my year abroad in Cape Town, I went on to receive a Masters in Africana Studies at Cornell and I am now enrolled in a Ph.D. program in African Studies at Howard.  My research is in the area of South Africa cinema, a subject I was exposed to at UCT.  And in 2008, based on relationships I developed as an EAP student in 2000, I returned to UCT as a visiting researcher at the Centre for African Studies to conduct research for my dissertation.

I befriended a girl in the same program from UCI.  We became close when my spanish boyfriend introduced her to her soon-to-be spanish boyfriend.  The four of us hung out all the time and traveled extensively.  Lauren (the UCI Student) and I are still friends 5 years later.  After we graduate college in 2005 and went our ways in our professions, we got into contact in 2006, and became business partners.  We became invested business partners in a new adventure and also moved in together in Newport Beach.  Two years later, we've become stronger, more ambitious leaders and decided to hault our financial business when the economy went south last year.  Today, we are still great friends, stay in regular contact, but without studying abroad, I wouldn't have been as confident and willing to move from my home in San Diego and attempt a business venture with my now, life-long friend I met in Spain.

I still maintain communication with Spanish roommates, and Italian friends I met abroad.  I credit my Spanish language fluency to my year abroad.  I also credit EAP as a way to my first job for being able to relate to other professionals who also lived abroad, and the necessity to be a bilingual staff resource.

Spain - Madrid
1993-94
I continue to have amazing friendships with my close friends in Spain.  I also feel confident of traveling anywhere because I spent a year abroad.  I feel like spending the year abroad gives me confidence in job interviews because I am bilingual.  I just loved my year abroad!

Spain - Madrid
1999-2000
While studying in Spain, I took several classes themed around the success of the Spanish transition to democracy.  I was able to learn about this period of Spanish history from a completely different perspective than had I studied it in the US.  The topic intrigued me so much I wound up dedicating my Senior thesis to it.

Spain - Year

While in Spain, I worked as a TA for one of the English professors on campus. I worked with Spanish students who wanted to be English teachers in small groups, helping them practice their own English skills. The experience encouraged me not only to pursue teaching, but also to pursue becoming an ESL/EFL teacher. Next year, I will be starting a TESOL Master's program, with the hope that this will give me more opportunities to live abroad, doing something that I love.

After graduation, I was accepted to the MEC Language and Culture Assistant program and taught English in a public high school in Santanter, Spain for two years.  I met my boyfriend, who is Spanish, and he is trying to find a job in San Francisco, where I now live.     After living abroad, I realized what I want my career path to be - to work, either coordinating, directing, and of course, advocating study abroad programs.  Although I do not work in this field now, I have been trying to enter it (I've even applied for EAP positions), and I hope to soon!  I am a firm believer that studying abroad is one of the best ways to learn, not only about the world, but yourself at the same time.      I have also considered moving aboard again - either to work, go to graduate school, or do another intensive language program in France.      Last, but not least, I'm fluent in Spanish!

Spain / Year

After spending a year studying and living in Madrid, I had the confidence to move to Buenos Aires, Argentina.  I have been here for over 2 years now and work for a Peruvian company with offices in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.  Without my knowledge of Spanish and belief in myself that I gain in Madrid, I would have never had the courage to take this opportunity.  The year in Madrid truly gave me confidence in myself that I could accomplish things that seem impossible to other people.

Spain- Granada

I studied in Granada 2001-2002.  The next year I returned to UCSB and graduated in June 2003 with a double major in Spanish and Psychology.  I moved to Barcelona, Spain in August 2003 and have lived here ever since!

I had studied Spanish since 5th grade, was a major at UCSB getting all A's.  I never would have become bilingual if I hadn't lived in Madrid for a year.  I couldn't speak Spanish.  I have taught in Chula Vista, CA. for 38 years, some years teaching ESL and bilingual education.  I never would have been able to do that without EAP.  When I decided to enroll in EAP, I had no idea it would influence my life so much.

Spain, Madrid

I met the absolute best friends of my life on my study abroad program. When you are thrown into a totally foreign situation and asked to live with people you've never met, who speak another language from you and understand the world differently from you, you crave anything that will remind you of home. Sometimes just speaking English with a new friend who is experiencing the same disorientation and culture shock as you can be so comforting. The bond created by sharing travel experiences and learning to survive together is unsurpassable. You get to know the best and worst of each other so quickly. You are each other's family abroad and everyone cooperates to create a positive, inclusive environment.

My political persuasion was completely molded by studying abroad...Being in Madrid during the March 11 terrorist attack taught me so much about being involved in politics, knowing what the parties say and more importantly what they DON'T say, and how to be a peaceful protester.  My language skills are still strong enough for me to be a translator at work and to learn other languages easier and converse with my boyfriend's family.  My traveling confidence is very high and I know the exact type of traveler I am to get the most out of the experiences I am blessed to go on.

When I went abroad, I thought I might minor in Spanish.  After spending a year in Spain I decided to double major with Spanish as my second major.  Due to my experiences abroad, I learned to truly embrace both the Spanish language and cultures.  I write "cultures" because during my time in Spain I met Spanish speakers from other countries and I loved learning about the differences in celebrations, traditions, pronunciation, word usage, etc. amongst the different countries where Spanish is spoken.  I now teach Spanish!

Following my EAP experience, and having graduated from UCSB, I returned to Spain for another 18 months to live and to teach English.  Later, after graduate school, I move to Chile and because of my Spanish language skills as well as my academic and professional background, I easily obtained a job as an environmental coordinator at a large Chilean environmental engineering firm.  I lived in Chile for over 2 years, during which time I traveled often in many South American countries.  Several years after that, I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for 2 years in Ecuador. I attribute all of my international experience to my EAP year abroad.

After graduating I worked for a year teaching English in southern China, a possibility by which I would probably have been intimidated had I not already lived abroad.  My abroad experience gave me the confidence to take a chance on accepting a post-graduation overseas job, and the awareness that such opportunities were available, attainable, and immensely enriching.     Also, I am currently living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, pursuing a post-graduate degree.  Without the language skills acquired in Spain, and the comfort and familiarity I already had with studying abroad, I probably wouldn't have considered this as a possibility.

I met my husband during my study abroad year in Sweden and our daughter was born there. I enjoyed Sweden so much, my life and friends there that I lived/studied/worked there for over 6 years. I return to Sweden regularly, am fluent in the language and currently work as a freelance with a few Swedish companies. It is where I feel most at home today, though I currently live in New Zealand with my growing family.

SWEDEN Lund
1966
I was part of the first group to attend Lunds University in Sweden.  My knowledge of Europe and especially Northern Europe gained during my time in Lund was a key factor in a long, wonderful career in the federal government where I served the last eight Secretaries of Defense as a foreign affairs and national security advisor.  My Swedish experiece played a key role in the late 1980s when I was appointed to be the Secretary's personal representative to the two-year 40 nation negotiation of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) aka the Helsinki Process, later the OSCE.  The CSCE was hosted by Sweden in Stockholm. I was number three on the US Delegation, and developed strong working relations with the Nordic delegations; they were all mpressed with my ability to talk to them in Swedish.  These relationship remained strong throughout my career in government, especially with the Swedes. Upon returning to Washington at the conclusion of the negotiations, I formed a non-profit society, 'The Swedish-American Cultural Union' in Washington to promote US-Swedish interests from a professional perspective.  SACU has remained a vibrant organization in the Washington, DC area.

I met my current boyfriend while abroad. The unique circumstance of immersing into something totally new allows for people to bond in a different manner than is possible in the states in my experience. Traveling abroad enhanced my knowledge base of what life means and expanded the scope of the kinds of people I have known and seen. Studying abroad had a huge impact on what I've done since with my life.

i decided to pursue a career of architecture after studying it in sweden.  i gained a love for travel in my experience in sweden that drastically changed my future.  i decided after to get my masters in caluifornia, and i am now living in new zealand as a practicing architect.  this would have never have happened had i not developed these passions in sweden.

Study abroad was crucial in my decision to go to law school and do human rights work.

Sweden/Year
2004-2005
Doing EAP has completely changed my life. I met a Swedish guy during my year abroad who I am now engaged to! I also went back to Lund University for my master's degree as a result of my time on EAP, and absolutely love traveling now as a result of the program. I have also since lived in Vietnam and am now currently living in Australia. I would never have had the confidence to live and travel abroad like this if it weren't for EAP.

I have a powerpoint that I made to share with my high school French students about my time in Togo. In it are mostly pictures I took, along with a few pictures I downloaded from the Internet. I'd love to send it to you, although the file might be too large to attach here. I'm also interested to see if I could come into contact with other participants from this year on the Bordeaux/Togo program (I was the only UCSB participant, and there were 8 total from the entire UC system). The photo I've attached is one of me and a group of young people at the village of Bassar in Central Togo. I went there during a school break and spent a few days exploring the area and hiking up Mount Bassar.

Rebecca (Wood) Akroyd, London, UK Queen Mary 2001-02

Studying abroad in London my junior year COMPLETELY changed my life - and I recommend the experience to anyone and everyone. Two months in, I met my now-husband (an Englishman) - because of him, I moved back to London after graduation, and had the experience of working abroad. Now, we live back in California, and are very thankful we met! Academically, taking Law courses in London was a bit of a shock to my system (I took graduate courses as an undergrad), but helpful for me - I later went to law school, and my year abroad provided a bit of a preview. If you're not sure about studying abroad, feel free to contact me - best experience of my life!

Megan Bean- Birmingham, England 1991-92

My year abroad shaped my life in just about every way. I’m now happily married to an Englishman I met in the first week in Birmingham and my year there at the School of Law was great preparation for my subsequent JD from Duke and career at one of the top 10 US law firms.

I learned so much history and got an understanding of England and Europe.  I now work (in the United States) for a British company.  I can't say that job resulting from me having been lived in England, but it's great background for me to interact with those in the London office (including my direct supervisor).

United Kingdom
2004
It opened the door to many further areas of international travel and study that I wouldn't have previously considered. It also taught me many of the inter-personal skills that have helped me succeed in various different cultures.

I made amazing friendships in the two months during the summer 2006 that I still talk to frequently.

My studies in EAP directly affected my decision on to obtain a Ph.D.

My year abroad helped me during my interviews for my Masters in Geophysics.  Also, when I interviewed for a job as a Geophysicists three years later, all the interviewers were impressed.  I believe studying abroad showed that I was a "risk" taker and someone who could be independent, competent, and reliable in the workplace.  One interviewer called me the next day to offer me a job; not one other job applicant I knew from my University received such an offer.

I met the professor who later helped me get a position as a visiting scholar at his home university during my graduate studies. I was also introduced to Environmental Archaeology which influenced my doctoral topic.

After a year living in a city as large and diverse as London, I was able to confidently move to New York City to take an internship in my field (art history). I ended up living in NYC for 11 years.

I took a cargo ship to Egypt.

As a result of my study year abroad, I am now living in England married to an Englishman that I met that year.  I have lived in England now for over 20 years and have a family who are now fortunate to have both British and American citizenships which will open many doors for them.  Being an American living in England has opened my eyes to world events and has changed my outlook of not only the world but about America.  I am currently working in a British secondary school and being an American has allowed me to contribute differing views and information to the students.

United Kingdom
1991-1992
As an English major at UCLA I was attracted to studying abroad in the UK for obvious reasons and ultimately studied at University of Birmingham. At the time, I also had a strong desire to study abroad but did not have the level of foreign language necessary to access a study abroad program in a non-English speaking country. During my year of studies in the UK I in fact met a French man whom I later married. Ironically, I have now been living and working in France, having become bilingual in French in the meantime, for the past 15 years. Yes, my year of study in the UK changed my life forever! After studies in English, I went on to study international taxation and human resources on the graduate level and have been working for the last 15 years as an International Tax & HR Consultant for a large international accounting firm (specialized in assisting expatriate employees). As an American likely based permanently abroad for life, it is essential for me to have constant contact with the international community and to be part of helping people better navigate through their international work environments - this desire began during my year abroad in the UK.

--A lifelong relationship with England.  I met my companion-for-life (English) in my first week on campus.  It took us 5 years of a long distance relationship and another 4 years of living State-side together before we finally took the plunge and married.  We now have 2 children and live in the States, though we travel to England annually.  --EAP forced me to pick a major (law & society) and devote almost all of my studies in England to the subject (in a law school setting).  I eventually attained my JD from Duke Law and practiced with a top 10 law firm in Los Angeles.  My path on all of these fronts would have been a different one had I not had my year in England.  --I have a passion for travel that can't be shaken.  While in England, I (and my fellow EAPers) travelled around Europe during every break from our studies.  After college I returned to England on a BUNAC student work visa and saved for a 7 month backpacking trip through Asia.  Later travels led me to South America for 5 weeks.  I'm eager for my next big trip, though it's much harder with a family and a career.  --I still consider several of my fellow EAPers to be close friends, and thanks to online social networking like Facebook, our virtual reunion is growing.

I've learned to see myself as a citizen of our diverse humanity and have appreciated Mother Earth for providing a playground for me to explore.

I still have several friends from my host country who i keep in touch with and have visited (or they have visited me) several times over the years.

Much better global perspective after studying abroad.  A few years after studying abroad I went and lived in Germany and Italy for 4 years. It opened my eyes and made me want to experience more of what it was like to live in other countries.

United Kingdom
1996/97
I met my wife in the dorms I stayed in.  Consequently I ended up moving to the UK and becoming a dual citizen.

United Kingdom
1999-2000
I was able to travel a lot of Europe and the UK during my holidays while abroad. I developed a sense of self while navigating the globe and built confidence in myself. I learned to rely on myself and take care of myself.

United Kingdom
2004-2005
I applied for a 6 month work visa with the BUNAC program after graduation and moved back to the United Kingdom to work.

United Kingdom
2005/2006
My confidence level to adapt to any new situation or experience was dramatically affected by my year spent abroad. Through EAP, I found the strength and ability to accept new challenges and become a more well-rounded individual.   I am also far more willing to travel, to try new things, and I accept change with more ease.  Simply put, I came back to the states with a brand new perspective and attitude toward life and all of it's challenges, and I honestly believe that all of the aforementioned affects of EAP gave me the what I needed to move out on my own and into a brand new environment after graduatin UCSB.

The roommate I was placed with in London became a close friend and was one of the bridesmaids at my wedding four years later. We never would have met without this experience.

UC London - Bloomsbury

I can't say that anything "came about as a direct result" of my time in London through EAP, though it has certainly helped me in specific situations during my career as an assistant in the entertainment industry.  For example, both the President of our company and our Director of Development will be traveling to London later this month, and I have been tasked with coordinating travel and scheduling over 20 meetings across London to take place within a 3 day window.  My knowledge of urban London, its geography and public transit has been invaluable in assuring that I successfully get both of my Executives to all of their meetings and on time.

I was married in Scotland with a friend from UEA in attendance.  I have maintained friendships with people in the UK since I left.  It also made me have a lot more confidence.

United Kingdom - University of Birmingham
1991-1992
I have always loved traveling, and my year abroad gave me an extended opportunity to see so much of Europe.  Given the time off during the school year and the summer afterwards, I spent almost 4 months backpacking around Europe, forming lifelong friendships along the way.  I still remember an impromptu trip with 4 friends to Ireland where we rented a car and toured the country for a week. The proximity allows you to visit the hidden towns that never would have made an itinerary you would have planned before you arrived.  Sitting in an old pub, drinking a pint of Guiness while four musicians just sitting around the table next to us began to play the fiddle, drum, flute, and guitar.  What a timeless memory.

I was inspired to become an ESL teacher and travel.  So I did become an ESL teacher. But the travel part... I've postponed since I have family here.

I developed self-confidence that I would be a successful adult in the world.  I learned to maneuver in a large city for the first time in my life as an adult and as a local, broadening my cultural understanding in a rice nd diverse community.  My horizons were expanded and the world got a bit smaller.

Open perspective from interacting with other cultures and seeing some of the most beautiful sites in the world. Opens your mind to alternative way of living, priorities and to appreciate all that you have in your life.

United Kingdom, Edinburgh
1975-76
I returned to the UK for five years to pursue a Doctorate at another university. My first child was born in the UK.  My first job was in the field of my studies (I worked as an international music publisher so the EAP experience was key to that both in the area of study and the international experience, then as a lawyer doing music work).

United Kingdom/Birmingham Year Long
1999-2000
Studying abroad gave me a stronger sense of self and confidence, as well as the ability to work well with individuals of varied backgrounds. It also gave me a clearer understanding of America's place in the world and how others view Americans. It has been nine years since I studied abroad and I still keep in touch with my flat mates from Birmingham, England. I teach high school now and I encourage all my students to study abroad. It was the best choice that I've ever made in my life.

United Kingdom/Cambridge

I met my wife during the EAP program in Cambridge, England.  She was a fellow EAP student from UCLA.

United Kingdom/Cambridge

I know that I am competitive for any career. Studying at Cambridge University has shown that I can earn straight A's at one of the best universities in the world.  It begs the question, "What can she not do?"

United Kingdom/Cambridge
2002
I studied abroad in on the UK Cambridge summer program in 2002.  I fell in love with the city and the university and consequently applied for graduate study at the University of Cambridge after my graduation from UCSB.  After winning Gates fellowship to fund my graduate studies, I returned to Cambridge as a full-fledged grauate student in the fall of 2004.  Without having previously experienced Cambridge as a student, I never would have embarked on such an adventure for graduate study!  However, the transition to living abroad for graduate school was much easier given my previous experience on the UC EAP program.  My time in grad school in Cambridge further influenced my decision to obtain a Ph.D. and hopefully to become a professor someday. The UC EAP program also influenced my life on a personal level by providing us with British student "tutors" to assist our transition over the summer.  I became fast friends with one of them.  To this day, we are in constant communication despite how far apart we live.  We visit each other as often as possible, and I consider her one of my best friends.  The UC EAP program in Cambridge honestly changed my life in so many ways.

United Kingdom/Cambridge
2004
As a result of studying abroad, I can't imagine a life without traveling. Someday, I do hope to travel to every country in the world. Also, I would like to pursue graduate study either in a foreign country and/or related to international relations (in combination with an MBA).

United Kingdom/England - Lancaster
1998-1999
After I completed my degree, I returned to England on a work visa.  Living abroad was an amazing experience and as a academic advisor, I encourage my students to take advantage of this oportunity.

United Kingdom/Hull
1994-1995
A US rock band I was in toured the UK twice, 10 years after I studied abroad, but some of the friends made during my jr. year made our time on the road there even more memorable.

United Kingdom/I
1999-2000
I have maintained contact with friends in the UK for 10 years.

United Kingdom/Ireland / Pembroke, Cambridge
Summer 2005
As an English major, studying in the UK gave me a renewed and sophisticated perspective on my area of study.  Having lived in the country for the summer, I understood issues written about in literature that otherwise I would not have fully appreciated.

United Kingdom/Kent
1988 - 1989
By far, one of the most fundamental experiences in my adult life.  It had a profound impact then and will continue to do so in the future. The best of my four years and the source of lifelong friendships that I treasure today.

United Kingdom/Queen Mary
2001-2002
I spent two years living abroad in countries where I didn't speak the language after graduating from UCSB - I would never have dreamed of doing that without the confidence I learned while living in London through EAP. While abroad, I saw incredible things and met incredible people - my life certainly wouldn't be the same without EAP.

United Kingdom/Sheffield
1990-91
Developed a life-long appreciation for looking at issues from different perspectives.  Directly lead to decision to go to law school.

United Kingdom/UEA Norwich
1997-98
Because I travelled around so much while studying abroad, I knew I had to go back and live in Scotland, one of my favorite places.  I ended up getting a student visa through BUNAC and working abroad in Edinburgh for 6 months after I graduated from UCSB.  This was again a life changing experience and I have developed some very close friendships with people from all my experiences abroad.

United Kingdom/Univ. of Birmingham
1991-1992
As a result of my study abroad experience, I have a better appreciation for differences in cultures - even those that appear to be so similar to the one we've always known here in the US. In addition, I have wonderful memories of the weekend outings I embarked upon, as well as the bigger sojourns I undertook. I think what was most surprising was what happened after I returned from one of my first longer getaways during my year abroad.  Up until then, I felt like an outsider, and where I lived didn't feel like home. But after traveling for a couple weeks, upon returning to my adopted country/city, without even recognizing that a change had occurred, it suddenly did feel like home - warm and welcoming - and I no longer felt like an outsider.

During my study abroad experience I met other people who were also from CA and since the year abroad I am still in contact and close friends with 6 of them. I also made lasting friendships with people from England.

United Kingdom-Trinity College Dublin

I began my study of medieval English literature while abroad and subsequently entered graduate school with that specialization. Actually seeing artifacts--manuscripts, images, buildings--and being in the environment in which the literature was written brought history alive to me.  Becoming a historian is one result of my study abroad experience.

University of Leeds / JYA
1999-2000
Because of my experience in Leeds, I decided to receive my MA from another universtiy in the UK. After living in the UK for several years, I met many amazing fellow students from various countries. Due to these friendships I decided to move to Tokyo after grad school and became an English teacher. Now I am currently living and working in New York all as a result of making the inital decision to study abroad my junior year as a undergraduate at UCSB.

University of Sussex, United Kingdom
1998-1999
I've met a handful of people in my career since EAP that have studied abroad, and have formed an instant professional and personal connection.  Networking alone has been such a valuable result.  I also had the opportunity to work for the UCSB EAP office as part of a work-study that allowed me a chance to encourage others!  I loved it!

Scotland
1993
I was a chemical engineering major, so studying abroad didn't offer some of the same things as other majors.  Math is pretty much the same everywhere.  However, what it did offer me was extra help back at UCSB.  I stood out from the rest of the class and professors were more interested in talking with me and finding out about the experience... which helped me transfer classes over and graduate basically on schedule.

Scotland
1981-82
After my year abroad, I went on to do Post-graduate studies in European Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. I had intended on concentrating on Britain/Ireland at that time, though I ended up focussing on Italy instead. However, I also ended up marrying a British citizen, relocating to Britain, and am now a senior lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Worcester. I certainly would not be living and working in Europe if I hadn't had that experience.

Scotland
1988-89

Scotland
1997/1998 academic year
I made a number of really good friends that I have travelled with and corresponded with a great deal over the years since I was abroad.  Those relationships have stood the test of time and are amoung the strongest I have from my time at UCSB.

I married a man who loves to travel; we've traveled extensively with our children, and my son is now an exchange student in Argentina as a junior in high school.  I am much more interested in international events, and I have a greater appreciation and interest in Scottish and British culture and history as a result of my EAP experience.

Scotland/St. Andrews University

My year abroad gave me confidence in my ability to move to a new area and to know that I can function independently and effectively.

Scotland/Stirling
1998-1999
I loved my year abroad so much that I decided to attend graduate school in Scotland. As it happens I ended up getting a good job and staying here.
