**Applications are due by 4:00 PM!**
Turning in your application: You
will need to submit your application in person;
you cannot just drop it off in an envelope or have
a friend deliver it. For most programs, you
can submit your application on or before the due date.
Although there are no special privileges offered to
those who turn in their application early, you might
be able to save time by beating the crowds. For the
American University of Paris, France, however, no early
applications will be accepted!
When turning in your application, please arrange the
original and each set of copies in the order
listed on the application instructions. Please
use paper clips-DO NOT STAPLE!
When you submit your application we will need to review
it, make sure it is in the proper order, add your letter(s)
of recommendation and language evaluation (if any), and
transcripts (if official). We will ask you to list your
cumulative GPA, calculate your language GPA (if applicable),
and give us your schedule of availability for interviews,
if applicable. This will take 15-30 minutes. We
will have all our EAP personnel available to check in
applications. We expect to receive up to 150 applications
that day so allow yourself extra time, as you might have
to wait up to an hour in line.
Online Application: Please remember
to 1) print out the online application and, 2) hit the “submit” box.
The hard copy will need to be copied with the other documents
you submit to us. Before you copy it, review it carefully
to ensure it is correct and sign the third page. If you
have any difficulty with the online application, please
contact the helpdesk at helpdesk@eap.ucop.edu.
You may use the computers in our office; we will help
you as much as possible.
Academic Planning Form: It is important that
you list the major(s) and minor(s) that you plan to pursue
at UCSB regardless of what you have “declared” with
your college. If you have two majors, or a minor, or
are in the process of declaring a major (or a minor),
or are declared as a “pre-major”, you must
have the undergraduate advisors in all major/minor departments
sign your Academic Planning Form. If you have decided
to pursue a major or minor and have not yet declared
it, list the major or minor in your application and have
the undergraduate advisor sign your Academic Planning
Form form. If your undergraduate advisor is not
available to meet with you prior to the application deadline,
complete the Academic Planning Form and submit a copy
by the deadline without his or her signature. After
the deadline you will need to meet with your advisor
and submit the signed Academic Planning Form.
Please Note: If the checklist for your
EAP application requests an “Academic Planning
Form (APF) with Departmental Pre-Approval to Extend (DPA),” you
must complete and submit the page titled “2007-2008
Departmental and College PRE-APPROVAL to Extend (DPA),” even
if you have no intention of extending.
Letters of Recommendation: Each
EAP program has different requirements. Please refer
to your application instructions to see if your program
requires two, one or no letters of recommendation.
Your letter(s) of recommendation should be submitted
in sealed envelopes with your application
by the deadline. We will copy the letter(s) and insert
them in your application. If you have not received your
letter(s), please ask your instructors to give them to
you as soon as possible. We recommend that you give a
thank you note to your professor/TA. Be sure to mark
whether you waive or choose not to waive your rights
on the form and sign it.
Photocopies: We will need the
original and appropriate number of copies
of the application forms, statement of purpose, transcripts,
planning forms, preference sheet (if applicable), and
passport signature page. We do not need copies of your
photograph. Review your application instructions to see
how many copies to submit. Remember to make an extra
copy for your own records. Please be careful when making
copies – remember professors here and officials
at host universities abroad will be reading these documents!

Take advantage of this great resource. Contact CLAS
directly to find out the dates/times for their EAP
workshops http://www.clas.ucsb.edu/index.htm
Statement of Purpose: Be
careful about your use of "complement/compliment", "affect/effect", "deep-seated" not "deep-seeded" and "it
piqued my interest" not "it peaked my interest".
Bonus points are awarded if you avoid using the phrase "totally
immerse myself" or "completely submerge myself
[in another culture]." Discussion of travel plans
outside of your host city/country should be kept to
a minimum. Please read on for more pointers.

Academic Residence Requirements: EAP
participants are given no preferential consideration
regarding UCSB residence, although those who participate
as seniors do receive an exception. Courses taken on
EAP will not satisfy the residency requirement. Please
be aware of and very careful to fulfill these UCSB residence
requirements, especially if you are planning to graduate
while abroad:
- The completion of 3 terms in residence
at UC.
- Completion of 20 upper-division units in
a major in residence at Santa Barbara. This
applies to double majors as well. And remember that
you need 20 separate units in residence
in each major.
- Completion of 12 upper-division units in
a minor in residence at Santa Barbara (if
applicable);
- Completion of 27 total upper-division units in
the college of the student's major, which includes
the 20 above at UC Santa Barbara;
- Completion of 35 of the final 90 units required
for graduation at UC Santa Barbara if you
participate in EAP as a senior; otherwise, the requirement
is 35 of the final 45 units.
-
Student who has met the requirements
above by the beginning of their senior year may,
with the prior approval of their department, graduate
upon completion of the final term abroad, provided
they have fulfilled all degree requirements with
EAP work. Note: Students who are
unable to fulfill all degree requirements while on
EAP must return to UCSB and take at least 12 units
to comply with the residence requirement and fulfill
final degree obligations. (Even if only one course
is needed to fulfill a specific requirement, the
student must still enroll in and complete a total
of 12 units in residence at UCSB subsequent to the
year abroad.)
Transfer Students: For
those of you who have just transferred to UCSB, you will need
to submit a UCSB transcript even though you may not have
completed any coursework at this point. For those of
you who are currently studying at another institution
but plan to transfer to UCSB in the winter, spring, or
fall 2007 quarter and are not living close to UCSB, you
can mail in your application; but please 1) ensure that
we receive it by the deadline, 2) ensure that all items
are copied and organized in the order outlined in the
application instructions and, 3) contact us to follow-up
with the remaining requirements.

In the weeks following your application due date, you
may be contacted to participate in a group or individual
interview. The main purpose of this interview is
to evaluate your level of preparation for your program
and knowledge of the country in which you wish to study.
For just a few of our programs, where there are more
applicants than guaranteed spaces, the interview will
help the advisor determine which students will be selected,
and whom will have to be named as alternates.
For some of our programs no interviews will be conducted. Do
not be alarmed if you are not contacted.
Tips for preparing for the interview:
- Educate yourself on your country’s current
issues and events by reading online news sources.
- Re-read your Statement of Purpose since it often
serves as the basis for the interview questions.
- Research important historical, political, social
and economic facts about your country in encyclopedias,
on the web, or travel guides (available in our office).
- Talk to students who have participated on the program
(emails available in our office).
